After an exhausting day yesterday filled with a tour of Kelmscott Manor and a hike in the English countryside in search of Wayland Smithy and the Uffington White Horse, I needed a good meal to fill up my tank. I had heard prior to leaving that the best Indian food in the world resides in England and I was getting pretty sick of the typical pub cuisine of fish and chips or burgers and chips.
After roaming around Oxford in search of something to satiate our hunger for curry, Nick, Phil, Matt, Jeremy, and I found a hole-in-the-wall Indian restuarant called Chutney. We decided to venture in to test our luck and our stomachs. The outside of the building was rather deceptive as it seemed rather unappealing and less than reputable; however, after wandering in, the helpful employees and charming interior immediately clashed with the unassuming exterior. We were quickly seated and instantly had two servers come to our table offering drinks and starters. After perusing our menus, we each decided on our meal for the evening. Phil and I ordered a rather spicy lamb curry with basmati rice, and Matt ordered a more mild chicken curry served atop basmati rice. Nicholas chose a coconut curry with nan, and finally Jeremy chose some sweet and sour lamb curry with rice at random.
Our food was quickly brought out and we dug right into our meals. My tastebuds danced at the complexities of the spice filled sauce and the meal certainly hit the spot after the busy day. This Indian food was certainly superior to anything I have found in the United States so far and the price was better as well.
If this is an indicator of how Indian food is in the U.K. then I look forward to finding some more curry in the future. We leave for London in two days and one of the first stops for me will be another hole-in-the-wall Indian restaurant with some delicious cuisine.
